Best pocket camera?
Posted: 2008-05-22 @ 7:08 pmHey guys, I need some opinions. What’s the best point-and-shoot digital camera on the market right now? I’ve been contemplating getting a new one and I need some thoughts. I was looking at Nikon’s CoolPix line and they seem ok. I’d like something that takes nice, vibrant colored pictures. Thank you!
I better hurry and get offline now. We’re under tornado watch and from what I’ve heard, tornados have already been spotted outside my city. Greeeeat.

I have the cool pics cam its AMAZING! you can edit your pics even before you upload them I love it and highly recommend it good luck!
I have a Cannon PowerShot SD850 IS and I love it. It has image stabalization, a good flash and has multiple settings (one that allows you to take pictures of moving objects without them getting blurry (ie: your dogs)). Plus, from power-on to taking a picture is only a few seconds so the only thing you need to worry about it getting it out of your pocket on time.
As for vibrant pictures, most point and shoot cameras are fairly similar. You should check out flickr to see what camera’s your looking at to see what kind of picture quality you’re looking for. They have the camera section there.
Also, go to cnet.com and compare prices and features you’re looking for in your price range. I love that site and they’ll also give you the best prices you can get for that camera on the net.
… and im done rambling for now.
You should definitely compare prices on that Tiffany suggested, we have a similar one in New Zealand and thats pretty good. Otherwise, I dont know what else to tell you other than I DID have one and that was a Sony Cybershot but I hear there are way better ones out there.
Get one with that feature where you can take a picture and no matter what theres no blur or anything. That looks kind of cool, saw it advertised in a magazine.
I prefer Sony though, my next one will probably be Sony again
:)
You can’t go wrong with any of the Canon Digital Elphs. I have a pretty nice Canon Digital SLR which LOOOOOVE, but I wanted a SMALL camera I could keep in my pocket for those times that I want to shoot, but don’t want to lug around the big one. I got the SD1000 because it was cheap and tiny and a Canon (I personally thing they are built better then the Nikon). It’s discontinued now, but I think the closest thing to it is the SD750 - about $165.
Huh… I can’t help you about the cameras… sorry!
I was just looking for interesting blogs and you seem quite interesting so I’ll keep checking your website :)
just wanted to say hi!
Hope everything’s alright. x
Happy Memorial Day Mindy!
I know little to nothing about cameras :( But I have been contemplating about a small, compact one for when I am in the field. The less I have on me the better, you know?
How’d everything pan out with the tornado?
Hey Mindy,
Tiffany’s suggestion of the SD850 is a great suggestion. I picked it up for a week and played extensively with it. However since I already owned a Powershot IS 5, there was very little difference between the two and it seemed silly for me to have a point and shoot that was so close in features to that. So in the end, I returned it for a Nikon Coolpix s600. I almost got the Olympus Stylus 1030SW, but determined I’ll never go swimming with my camera, but nice point and shoot no less.
The biggest reasons for the Coolpix was the image quality at low light. After I did some extensive comparisons, the ISO 1600 was actually usable on the coolpix over the SD850. The d-Lighting feature of the camera is also top notched, and the processor is the same processor that is used in their higher end cameras.
I chose that because a point and shoot portable is something that I want in my pocket (in your purse) that I can pull out and shoot anytime in any condition. Much of those conditions will be low light and I don’t want my photos to experience flash blowouts like so many cameras do. Feature wise, it’s not as robust as the Canon software, but I do like the Nikon’s internal features, and the presets are very very good compared with the Canon. Since I have a new baby, I wanted to capture all the moments I could. It also has the ability to track your subject which is a unique feature to it. Face recognition works better than the SD850, all stainless steel case construction, built in red-eye correction is a bonus and the macro is easier to use on it. The downside (or upside depending on how you look at it). There’s no quick way to go back to fully automatic (the Canon does) which means you need to remember to set your camera back to a fully automatic mode or you need to switch to a preset mode. The play back mode requires that you lens comes out before you can view images, and lastly the shutter lag - although is the fastest start-up time for a compact in it’s class, does suffer from a little shutter lag, but not untypical of most automatic digital cameras. It’s actually pretty fast compared to older technology.
If you want more info, give me a shout. I’ve just finished spending a week comparing cameras and finally settled on this one. I also looked at the Sonys, Fujis and Panasonics, so I have lots of info on those too.
Cheers

hey,,, i just got me a sony w200 cyber shot, of ebay, mindy mate its purfect, it will fit in your tight ass jean pocket or lil bag and it takes a great picture and its not to much money,,, check it out
hows the tornado i seen some of it on the tv, scary !
I have two Casio cameras and they are both okay, but I think I would choose a Canon camera next time.
Hey ms Mindy thought i’d be nosey but i have the cannon powershot SD 870IS and its awesome, great functions on something small, and all for under 300
I ran the 1 hour photo lab at Walmart for a year and a half, so I fooled around with the cameras extensively. Let me tell you, the Canons are retardedly overpriced. The only extra they have is a glass lens, while most other brands use a plastic lens. Unless you’re going for a large zoom cam, don’t waste your extra money, you won’t notice a difference.
The Casio z77 or z75 are awesome cameras for less than $170. 7mp, a 2.6 inch screen, and the best part, a shutter lag time of .004 - .008 seconds, one of the best on the market.
